The much-anticipated second season of the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel launches on the streaming platform this week, and audience theories has been intense.
The first season introduces a diverse group of characters living within Hell and Heaven, pits them against each other with songs about their clashes, and builds heated competitions and emotional bonds that fuel audience devotion.
The community's expectations for season 2 differ greatly, but certain themes emerge over and over: Will a fan-favorite character escape his tormentor? Will we find out more about the mysterious "deal" constraining the enigmatic Alastor? Might certain characters' relationships evolve?
"Obviously, I don't produce the show with audience demands specifically in mind," the showrunner commented recently. "But I feel like me being a devotee of the series implies there's a lot of it just inherently. I also am eager for these things, and I hope some of these things to occur, and clearly some of these things are meant to happen in the show!"
She says her big-picture plan is for a five-season run of Hazbin Hotel. Seasons 3 and 4 have received approval by Prime Video and A24, which finance the series.
That could imply fans have to wait years for some of the major resolutions — but they could be shocked at how fast season 2 progresses, and how much of what they're waiting for unfolds this season.
"I feel like people are going to be highly satisfied," the creator notes. "We get some firsts. I think we receive some really amazing disclosures, some really cool origin tales, and even basic elements, [like] I hope this character gets a song. […] Audiences will experience additional musical numbers from the characters we didn't get to hear before."
She's certainly aware of the theories and desires about season 2 — particularly in the form of audience prediction charts.
"I've come across a few fans create a bingo card about season 2," she says. "Naturally I won't share it, but I've already completed some of them, and nearly every one of them have almost a bingo. I thought, Oh, if you put this [event] in this spot, it would be a bingo. So that makes me think we do a lot [of what fans are waiting for in this season], because I was like, Oh, there's multiple potential bingos on this card. So that makes me happy."
Hazbin Hotel season 2 premieres on the streaming service on October 29.
