Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior official stated the incident left him stunned and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
