The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.
The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
